sometimes i get emails from people who are wondering what equipment i'm using, when i take my pictures, how i like my coffee, what my favorite utensil is etc. so i figured it's about time i made my answers public, tho to be clear, i am in no way deterring you from contacting me. i love receiving random emails.
what camera do you use?
majority of the time i use a Nikon D3000 and AF-S DX 18-55mm lens, it was a gift. sometimes i use a Casio EX-S600 for the times when i'm not home or at a restaurant. really old pictures were taken with an HP PhotoSmart M540, which was also a gift and my very first digital camera.
what other equipment do you use?
i bought a really cheap tripod from target a few weeks ago, for like $15. i'm not about brands or having the top of the line stuff, because i'm not a professional and i'm on a budget. prior to my tripod purchase, i would prop the camera on books, or whatever stable surface. i do have a flash diffuser that i don't use but it sure does make me look professional when it's on my camera.
when do you take your pictures?
during the winter months, and it's dark by the time i get home from work, on weekends, midday-ish. i do the bulk of my baking & cooking on the weekends anyway and if i do make something blog-worthy during the week, i use a craptastic daylight bulb or i wait til the next day when i'm at work & snap a shot of the leftover. during the summer, i still do the weekend thing but later sunsets give me some flexibility for after work shots, as long as there's plenty of natural light.
where do you take your pictures?
i recently rearranged my living room furniture so i could have the corner window reserved for picture taking. some would call this hardcore, others would call it foolish. i call it it's my house, i can do whatever i want.
how do you edit your pictures?
i use picnik, i do have photoshop but lord have mercy, i am too lazy to learn all the tricks of that software.
what props do you use?
whatever is handy. i try to keep it simple, sometimes i'll throw in a few utensils, plates, bowls... back when i first lived on my own, i had hand-me down kitchen stuff or i bought from the dollar store. i am slowly replacing those housewares with items i see on sale at Anthropologie, Target, Ikea, H-mart, home goods, tj maxx, kohl's... or shit, even Goodwill.
inspirations/aspirations?
i read food magazines, i pay attention to the layout of the picture, the angle etc. i also read good quality food blogs, not so much professional food blogs, but the blogs of everyday people who have an everyday life and blog just as a hobby (as opposed to a paid profession). there is a distinction. that's not to say that i don't appreciate the professional food bloggers, their content & photography are usually top notch, but i don't connect with them. i scan foodgawker and tastespotting, but more often than not, i refer to good old fashion cookbooks.
i do submit my photos to the aforementioned food photography sites and i get denied like it's my 2nd j.o.b. i learn from it (or sometimes i don't). failure is just an excuse to try again. and trust me, i get back up and try again.
why don't you have ads? would you be interested in having ads?
yes, i do take requests to make baked goods and yarn creations, but typically i price them to just cover the supplies. my time is valuable but that price is paid when i see how much the things i create make people happy. /emo-ness.
so what is your occupation?
i'm a headhunter. that's barbaric speak for recruiter. and no i will not find you a job.
why Angry Asian Creations?
you can read about it here, but to save you a click, long story very short, a coworker gave me the nickname Angry Asian years ago when i worked a very stressful agency recruiting job & i was constantly having to keep candidates in line. (don't ever not show up for work, i will track you down, sic unemployment authorities on you because you're messing with my income.) the name stuck. the last part came when after a very awful breakup i decided to take up knitting to keep me occupied. knitting didn't work out but crocheting did and i decided to have a "label" for any yarn products i made. plus, 'Creation' flows so well with Angry Asian, yes?
how do you like your coffee?
i like my coffee sweet but as of late, i've tempered it to just two creams, two sugars.
favorite utensil and kitchen toy?
i'm fairly ninja with chopsticks, comes with the territory of being asian, but i do have a soft spot for the round soup spoon. i'm partial to my avocado peeler which i use also to level flour. after that, i'm still infatuated with my kitchenaid mixer Bella, tho over the summer i treated myself to an ice cream maker attachment. yeah.
do you have a favorite cuisine to cook?
um. asian? it's whatever tickles my fancy. i cook for a roommate as well and she eats whatever i put in front of her. however, i do keep her tastes in mind, which is more spanish/mediterranean. i like to cook with seasonal foods, tho i have been known to bust out a salad in the dead of winter and a pot of hot ass soup in the heat of summer ~ you just never know with me! baking is a relatively new love for me, tho i rarely consume it. i like the method and exacting nature behind baking, plus, this is one thing i truly enjoy sharing.
are you currently working on any yarn projects?
i am always working on a yarn project, all year round. there's always a blanket, scarf, or animal to create. it's never ending and i love it.
why do you include music/movies/books/bloggers you're listening/watching/reading/following?
i try not to get too personal, tho i am guilty of it from time to time. it's a way to share another aspect of myself without giving away too much. plus, whatever i do share, it's quality shit. some may not have the same tastes as me, but i've never received a bad review of anything i recommend. last, if you're reading/following me, then more than likely you'll appreciate anything i'm reading/following.
do you respond to emails?
always. i may not respond to comments on time or they may be banal, but i always take the time to respond to an email.
if you have any questions, shoot me an email or leave it in the comments below.
