sudsing it up

i discovered a beautiful blog some time ago, the habit of being. the author takes gorgeous but simple photographs. she's also very insightful and even poetic in her prose. i really like her and i have to say, i've been swayed to be more mindful of the resources i use up and how it can effect me later.

one of her posts, dated 8/7/08, was about having a healthy home. she provided a recipe for homemade laundry detergent. i don't know about anyone else, but i had no idea that it was possible to make your own damn laundry detergent. how cool is that. i'm not sure if it's cheaper to make or to buy laundry detergent but at least you'll know what you're using to clean your clothes. just sayin... i'll be making my own laundry detergent soon. and i'm excited. a step in that direction, i recently went on a soapmaking stint. one night, with the broads and this past weekend, on my own. just a simple melt/pour method but still, very satisfying. once i figure out how to get supplies, i will try the actual soap from scratch method. i just gotta make sure i don't blow up my condo first.

they also make great stocking stuffers/mini-gifts for friends. it's not hard and it doesn't take long, but i think it's a thoughtful gift. i used supplies bought from michael's and joann's fabric. thankfully, the molds are re-usable and i think the colorants and scents are going to last, since you gotta be pretty frugal with the concoctions... you don't want to stain your hands/towels or kill your smell senses... (again, just sayin...) i'll have to research further to see just how much money i'll be saving doing things this way but i take comfort in knowing that i'm in control of the ingredients.

the creative possibilities are endless! you can add seeds for natural exfoliants. mix/match colors, scents. different molds. altho, i have to say, i'll stick to what i have for now probably and not buy any more of the randoms. after awhile, an inexpensive hobby turns into a crazy wallet crushing one and then i'm out.

besides, packaging is everything anyway. :) i used scraps of paper from my scrapbooking leftovers and ribbons. just to spruce it up a bit. a note tho, wrap in plastic to hold in the moisture and fend off dust until present time. i have been using one of the bars i made last week and while nothing earth shattering (like golden divine skin...) i haven't broken out or anything ...

stay tuned... i'll be posting about homemade laundry detergent and actual soap from scratch soon ... and maybe even a few other healthy living stuff too ... and who knows? i might even get on the whole healthy eating thing ... we'll see ...

but to my crew... just a peep of some things you'll be receiving from santa this year ... :)

  3. These are so great. How inspiring. I make my own food, and my bed... but I've never thought to make my own soap.

I know what you mean about the small hobby becoming a huge crush to the wallet... I've got a couple of my own as proof. The latest is sewing.
